Summary:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Under general supervision of The Director, this position is responsible for maintaining proper husbandry of living animal collection as needed, including tank design, cleaning and maintenance on a daily basis.
• Responsible for assisting with current and historic record keeping of all animal transactions as needed, Including the day to day entries of note for each individual within the collection, to meet AZA standards and USDA requirements.
In addition and as needed, under the direction of the Director:
• Assists in the education department with organizing, and providing formal or informal instruction as needed, including outreach presentations.

Qualifications and/or Experience:
• Minimum of one to three (1-3) years relevant experience maintaining live invertebrate collections required.

Summary:
• Reporting to the Director of Major Gifts and supporting the work of the Institutional Advancement Division staff team, the Prospect Research Coordinator provides strategic information regarding donors and prospective donors to the Missouri Botanical Garden.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Coordinates outside research on individuals using print and online resources, including Sorkin’s Directories, The Foundation Directory, Donor Scape, corporate reports, and other reputable/trusted sources of prospect information.
• Plans and prepares research profiles for donor cultivation/gift solicitation strategies and meetings.
• Maintains the Garden’s files for these activities in accordance with overall procedures for the Institutional Advancement Division, as well.
• Assists in preparation of donor correspondence, as directed.
• Works closely with the division’s operations staff through the Development Operations Manager to ensure that research information is added to/deleted from individual records as appropriate and in a consistent manner.
• Assists in training other division staff members in prospect tracking data collection and presentation for use by the division’s major gifts staff team.

Helps maintain interpretive displays and props. Provides visitor information regarding, directions, venues, attractions, special events, classes, and other information, while working in designated interpretive areas. Assists in ensuring safe, positive, and educational engaging visitors experiences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Processes Ticket & Merchandise Sales: Spends 50-60% of the work week answering visitor questions regarding ticket prices and products. Utilizes touch screen PC to processes Children’s Garden admission tickets and merchandise sales in accordance with specified cash and credit card handling procedures.
• Ensures Positive Visitor Experiences: Welcomes visitors and provides general information relative to visitor inquiries and Garden opportunities. Responds to concerns and complaints from Garden visitors by directing them to the on-duty supervisor. Assists regular staff in the offering of educational experiences, as needed, in the Children’s Garden, Tower Grove House, Brookings Interpretive Center, and within special exhibit areas.
• Adheres to Safety Guidelines and First Aid Provider: Communicates the Garden’s rules of etiquette to visitors in an effort to orient visitors to the facility. Monitors visitor behavior and ensures adherence to safety guidelines; responds to and administers First Aid/CPR as necessary, reports all incidents using appropriate Garden forms as well as any concerns to the Interpretation Supervisor and/or Manager, as well as Security as appropriate.
• Interpretation & Educational Resources: Follows proper storage protocol for educational equipment and supplies. Reports concerns and maintenance needs to the Interpretation Supervisor/Manager for proper processing.
• Assists in Opening & Closing Duties: Assists the Interpretation Team with pre-season set-up operations and post-season closing operations; moving/cleaning equipment, setting up/removing props, stock/remove merchandise, etc.)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Ensures a positive visitor experience by welcoming, admitting and directing guests in a friendly and professional manner; provides information in person or by answering the reservation and visitor information telephone line in an energetic and cheerful manner, providing callers with accurate information; applying comprehensive/accurate knowledge of Garden procedures and guidelines.
• Processes ticket purchases by utilizing a touch screen PC. Completes and processes cash and credit card transactions for admission, children’s garden, new and renewing memberships, and tour fees as well as other venues for which there may be an associated fee.
• Conducts Tours. Drives tram vehicle and conducts narrated tram tours of the Garden for visitors.
• Maintains team resources. Utilizes available resources to obtain current information related to Garden and member activities/events (i.e., access websites, Garden publications, email, and other related verbal and written communication updates as needed.
• Under the supervision of the Senior VSA: performs closing duties. Ensures all daily payments received have been reconciled and recorded, balances the drawer at the end of the shift, produces the VS Daily report and other reports as needed, straightens and organizes the ticketing area.
• Maintains a neat and clean Visitor Services’ work area at all times.
• Ensures a safe and secure work environment in compliance with Garden standards. Respond effectively to unanticipated situations. Be alert for opportunities to improve operation and service.

Summary:
• Provides a visual, unarmed security presence to preserve the safety and security of Garden staff/visitors and properties by: patrolling Garden buildings, grounds and parking lots; conducting inspections; and manning assigned posts. This is a second shift position generally working from 3 pm until 11 pm.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Security Officer is considered an “Essential Staff” member and is required to work scheduled shift at all times, in all conditions.
• Performs wand tours; patrols premises and conducts ground inspections on foot, bike, Segway, and using other Garden vehicles (i.e., golf carts, etc.) to maintain order and secure buildings (i.e., windows, doors, gates, etc.).
• Responds to Garden alarms and investigates disturbances; conducts periodic alarm testing as directed in accordance with required standards.
• Responds to calls for service from employees, volunteers, visitors, vendors, etc.; reports all incidents and accidents; serves as first responder to all medical emergencies calls and administers First Aid/CPR/AED as needed.
• Provides customer service, including motor vehicle assistance, to visitors, volunteers and employees (i.e. giving directions to other area attractions, greets public for weddings, parties, etc.
• Transports employees in Garden-owned motor vehicle to other campus buildings/parking lots as needed; provides personal protection; accompanies employees to their parked vehicles or other specified locations after standard operating hours.
• Detects and reports to supervisor any suspicious activities/actions which may be a threat to employees, visitors, volunteers, Garden property, etc.; prepares and submits daily electronic and written reports as required.
• Warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles and apprehends or expels persons engaging in suspicious or criminal acts.
• Assists with directing pedestrian and vehicular traffic through control points or gated entrances, as well as crowd control on Garden grounds.
• Accepts all lost and found items and writes information in the appropriate department log.
• Allows only authorized staff to enter facilities and prevents unauthorized access to restricted areas.
• Opens and closes facilities daily, ensuring the employees, volunteers and visitors have left the premises.
• Reports security breeches utilizing established procedures to supervisor or local law enforcement officials and assist them as directed or needed.
• Reports general maintenance concerns in accordance with established guidelines (i.e. broken locks, unlit emergency exit signs, etc.).
• Responsible for transporting sensitive property to various locations as directed.
• Promotes and maintains an environment that fosters trust, open communication, and teamwork, works effectively with other Garden departments and external organizations to accomplish goals and identify and resolve problems; reports issues to supervisor which cannot be resolved; maintains confidential information.
• Actively participates in Garden safety initiatives as necessary; adheres to all health and safety guidelines; prioritizes safety in fulfilling all assignments; provides continuous education to employees, visitors, volunteers regarding Garden policies/procedures.
• May provide front desk support as needed; answers telephones; performs light administrative tasks; and monitors video surveillance cameras.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
•Position requires fulfilling watch commander responsibilities on a rotational basis to accommodate scheduled and unscheduled days off.

Qualifications/Experience:
• Minimum 2-3 years’ experience as a security guard required; public venue experience a plus.
• Scheduling flexibility that allows working a rotated schedule, evenings, weekends and holidays.
• Ability to identify suspicious characters, movements and dangerous situations. Must always be alert and ready to deal with security emergencies.
• Ability to ask questions in ways that enhance the clarity, quality, and reliability of information; maintains confidentiality.
• Proven ability to maintain a calm demeanor when handling routine and crisis situations; poised, professional, self-confident, friendly attitude.

Summary:
• Installs, maintains and repairs all types of HVAC equipment. Responsible for the successful operation of the garden wide Andover system. Involved with the selection, purchase, and installation of new equipment and systems and provides instruction and support training to other members of the HVAC staff. Assists other maintenance staff with maintenance, service, and repair of display water features and displays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Performs preventive maintenance on all HVAC equipment including low pressure boilers up to 300hp, screw chillers, packaged roof top systems, greenhouse equipment, pumps, air compressors, etc.
• Installs new pieces of HVAC equipment or complete systems including associated piping according to specifications and established safety guidelines.
• Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment and system wide malfunctions. Makes recommendation for corrective action with emphasis on energy conservation, cost of operation, reliability, safety and performs repairs. Creates new programs and screen displays for the Andover system involving system wide HVAC equipment operation as well as campus wide security functions. May involve the use of Andover in various display functions.
• Installs and troubleshoots Andover hardware which involves system wide equipment.
• Performs repairs on pumps, compressors, and centrifugal equipment.
• Performs minor electrical and pipefitting repairs to HVAC systems.
• Assists and/or leads other staff who is performing similar work as needed. May involve conducting training on various pieces of equipment or entire systems.
• Identifies and initiates immediate corrective actions for any safety violations that may lead to injury of staff or visitors.
• Performs tests on water systems connected with HVAC.
• Maintains inventory and general care of equipment, tools, and supplies (i.e., apply lubrication and general cleaning). Refers more serious problems to Manager.
• Responsible for closing out work orders in the computer using TMA, research and locate equipment history, and maintain electronic records.
• Ensures that all applicable safety standards are followed: informs employees/students/volunteers of safety guidelines and safe working practices and routinely monitors to enforce them.
• Adapts or modifies work methods to reduce hazards.
• Performs back ups of all Andover programs and reloads programs as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
• No direct supervisory responsibilities but will monitor, assist and guide the staff performing similar duties or contractors working on site.

Qualifications/Experience:
• Minimum of five (5) to seven (7+) years’ HVAC and motor control experience.
• Demonstrated work experience troubleshooting, repairing, and operating a wide variety of HVAC equipment including boilers, chillers, packaged roof top systems, air handlers, freezers and coolers, exhaust fans, restaurant equipment, pumps, and compressors, with emphasis on centralized systems, etc.
• Strong working HVAC knowledge of multiple building complex with centralized utilities that may include hot and chilled water and an integrated campus wide energy management system.
• Thorough knowledge and understanding of safe work practices related to electricity and general construction. This involves wearing the necessary personal protective equipment; following lock out tag out procedures; and the proper use of hand tools, meters, and lifts. Utilize and operate both standard and power tools.
• Thorough understanding of Compliance guidelines and requirements with OSHA, EPA, and Industrial Safety Standards including Lock Out-Tag Out and Arc Flash.
• Must be able to read electrical drawings and keep accurate records. PLC knowledge and a willingness to remain current and update with changes in industry practices and systems.
• Working knowledge of Andover programming and hardware installation.
• Ability to install new equipment and systems from plans or under direction of facility engineer.

The Missouri Botanical Garden’s EarthWays Center (EWC) is offering up to two unpaid internship positions for the spring – summer and summer – fall of 2012. As part of the Garden’s Sustainability division, EWC works to promote and advance sustainability initiatives in the
St. Louis region and beyond. We promote sustainability through environmental education and improving the built environment. By educating people about our dependence on plants and the natural resources that support plant communities, we teach adults and youth to value and protect the things that sustain our families and communities. EWC works closely with the building industry through partnerships with the U.S. Green Building Council’s Missouri Gateway Chapter (USGBC), MO / IL St. Louis Regional Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program, and other professional groups. Work assignments may include GPS field data collection, data editing and enhancement, updating CAD As-Builts with GIS data, building ArcGIS Server web-mapping applications, as well as utilizing other software and extensions as appropriate.  MBG licenses various ESRI products including PLTS, ArcInfo, ArcPad, ArcGIS Server, Spatial Analyst, GPS Analyst, Network Analyst, 3D Analyst, and ArcScan. The Guest and Volunteer Services internship will provide plenty of practical experience working in the tourist industry and managing a diverse group of volunteers. The internship provides practical, hands-on work experience in a unique garden setting. Interns will assist the Horticulture staff and volunteers in maintaining the tropical conservatory garden, native habitats, prairie garden, annual garden, and grounds. Duties include, but are not limited to, planting, pruning, watering, and pest management. Interns will have direct contact with visitors and be responsible for answering general questions about the Butterfly House including questions about the plant collection and general butterfly questions. Internship requires an interest in horticulture, coursework in botany or horticulture, working on or recently completed a degree in a biological field, and the ability to work under hot conditions.

Requirements:
140 hour minimum commitment; minimum of one four-hour shift per week, not to exceed 16 hours per week (will adjust to meet school requirements)

Insect Keeper Intern

The Insect Keeper internship involves hands-on work with all non-venomous invertebrates and other animals at the Butterfly House. Interns will help maintain the collection and help process shipments. This will include feeding, tank cleaning and, when needed, tank set-up. Weekend and summer interns will be required to spend time in the classroom for hands-on demonstrations with education animals after completing animal handling training. 

Interns will be responsible for following all USDA/APHIS requirements and animal record guidelines. Interns will have direct interaction with the public and should be capable of answering questions about the butterflies and animals at the Butterfly House. They must also be willing to help educate the public about animals and their interactions with the natural world.

Summary: Primary responsibility is to assist education staff with hands-on outdoor school programs at the Shaw Nature Reserve, including meeting students, class management and preparing educational materials. Opportunities exist to observe and prepare individual lessons for delivery to students and work with teachers in an outdoor setting. This is a part-time position working an average of (20) hours a week and is located at the Shaw Nature Reserve in Gray Summit, Missouri.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assists education staff in the creation, development, and implementation of site-based programs at Shaw Nature Reserve (e.g. group facilitation, leading activities, etc.).
• Assists in the preparation of audio/written educational programs and materials for incoming school groups.
• Internship Project – Required to independently develop an “indoor or outdoor” educational program under the supervison of education staff (e.g. “Rainy Day” or “Self-Guided” activities are examples of acceptable project themes, etc.).
• Additional responsibilities may include assisting education staff with family and public programs; thus, working with many different size groups and people of all ages (e.g., Habitat Helpers (the ecology club) and other special events).
• May greet and orient students to SNR (e.g., provides agenda and discusses scheduled activities for the day).
• Works cohesively as a team with SNR Education staff.
• Demonstrates highest level of professional and ethical conduct.

Qualifications/Experience:

Summary:
• Primary responsibility is to assist horticulture staff with the restoration and horticulture work at the Litzsinger Road Ecology Center, a 34 acre environmental education center. This program will have a strong focus on understanding and conducting restoration and horticulture through a flexible weekly curriculum consisting of reading, field research, and on-the-ground work. Intern is required to develop an independent, site-based research project.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Actively works hands-on with horticulture staff to complete prairie and woodland restoration efforts (i.e. pulling weeds, planting seeds and small plants to revegetate the land, etc.).
• Identify and tag invasive plant species for eradication process; assists in control of invasive plant species through the use of manual, mechanical, and/or chemical methods.
• Operates power equipment and hand tools.
• Assists in trail maintenance – restore trail erosion (i.e., fill in with soil or other materials) to prevent and/or divert further water erosion; trash clean-up, etc.
• Collects and cleans seeds; plant and propagate cuttings.
• Assists with gathering data to complete plant population surveys
• Stream monitoring; track and record depth/height of stream; conduct various types of water analyses using a microscope.
• May interact with volunteers and high school groups; perform hands-on demonstrations.

The Photography Intern at the Missouri Botanical Garden will function as a staff photographer. They will be sent on a wide variety of different types of photo assignments including events, grip-and-grins, landscape beauty shots, macros, and editorial images. They will also be trained to coordinate photo requests and archive/process digital files. Recent interns have had their photos published in the Garden’s Bulletin magazine, ads in a variety of newspapers and magazines, and on Garden posters, flyers, and other support pieces.

Qualifications:
Recent grads or students that are near completing their B.A. in Photography/Arts. Coursework completed in photography, specializing in digital cameras. Proficiency in Photoshop for Mac OSX Platform, scanning, and color correction. Video camera and basic editing skills a plus. Must have your own digital camera, cell phone, and transportation.

This internship is specifically designed for those entering the events industry and NOT for candidates looking for marketing and public relations experience. Qualified candidates will possess a professional, service-oriented attitude, enthusiastically performing a wide variety of tasks, including: client interaction, development, project preparation and staffing of events during business hours and after-hours. A Special Events Intern is energetic, flexible, punctual, and dependable.

Primary Responsibilities: provide efficient special events support as a liaison between the Butterfly House and accounts/clients, help coordinate major in-house events and out-of-house events, and client correspondence. A special events intern must be able to work Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays including evenings (as late as 10 pm) as this is when most events occur.

The sustainability intern will participate as a member of our Green Team Steering Committee assisting in the coordination and implementation of recycling, energy efficiency, water saving and waste reduction programs. Tasks may include, but are not limited to, drafting written communications, preparing PowerPoint presentations, staffing an information table, scheduling meetings, conducting on-line research, data gathering and monitoring program achievements.

Qualifications:
Recent grads or students that are near completion of their B.A or B.S. The degree program can vary but must come with a passion for advancing sustainability within the Garden’s operations, strong organizational skills and a willingness to engage in the wide range of details of employee-driven programs.
