Former Interns...Where are they now?

Greg Cadice
Senior Horticulturist
21 years at Missouri Botanical Garden
MBG Hort Intern - Summer of 1986
Greg's internship started in the Japanese Garden where he was able to meet and work with the garden's designer, the late Professor Koichi Kawana. Seiwa-en, "garden of pure clear harmony and peace" is the largest Japanese garden on the North American continent.
Even though Greg's time interning with Koichi Kawana was 'officially' limited during his internship, he continued to work with him on his own even after acquiring a permanent position at the north end of the Garden 21 years ago. The great designer's insights continue to prove invaluable to Greg today since his current area of responsibility is once again in the Japanese Garden.
Greg oversees Nakagima, Teahouse Island, the innermost of four islands incorporated into the four-acre lake, Seiwa-en's main feature. Teahouse Island includes three traditional gardens surrounding the teahouse and is connected to the mainland by two footbridges. Greg takes care of the island and the area around the lake between the two bridges.
A talented landscape horticulturist, Greg demonstrates particular expertise in Water Gardening, teaching evening courses on the topic in Adult Education at Missouri Botanical Garden. Over the years, Greg has helped hundreds of folks learn the how-tos of starting, maintaining and winterizing small tub and in-ground-pool water gardens. In class, he covers the selection of plants and fish, and how to control common problems with algae overgrowth, mosquitos, and predators. Greg also teaches other horticulture classes in Adult Education. Visitors to the Japanese Garden today might see Greg in a wet-suit and snorkel looking somewhat like a frog-man, although it's all part of the job around Nakajima, Teahouse Island.
