A Few of the Volunteer Opportunities in the Horticulture Division of the Garden
Ottoman Garden:
This garden is designed to replicate the atmosphere of a garden located in the Ottoman Empire that existed from 1299 to 1922.
This garden is very intensive, as there are no turf areas within its boundaries. Primary duties are weeding, watering, pruning, planting, mulching, cultivating and removal of debris.
Above is a drawing detail of the exit gate of the Ottoman Garden towards the Swift Vista and Scented Gardens.
Doris I. Schnuck Children's Garden:
A number of volunteers are needed to assist with the care of the Doris I. Schnuck Children's Garden.
This 1.8 acre garden is located behind the Climatron on the site of the Osage Orange field. The plantings primarily feature Missouri native plant materials.
Primary duties will be weeding, watering, pruning, planting, mulching, cultivating and removal of debris.
Rose Gardens:
Volunteers interested in working in the rose garden will assist in basic garden maintenance. This includes uncovering, planting, deadheading, weeding, cultivating, mulching, edging and fertilizing. All work is done in full sun, so we need someone who can work in the summer sun. A wide brimmed hat, sunscreen (or long pants and long shirt) are recommended to protect yourself from the sun. It is recommended that you have leather gloves when working with the roses to protect your hands from the thorns. We need volunteers on Wednesday or Friday only.
Chinese Garden:
One volunteer is needed once a week to assist with the care of the Chinese Garden. This area is natural in appearance, consisting mostly of perennials and small shrubs, and has a quiet, peaceful setting.
The tasks include weeding, pruning shrubs and small trees, edging and mulching beds, watering, some planting, and dividing and transplanting. Basic knowledge of garden maintenance is the only requirement. All other training will be given as needed by the horticulturist assigned to the area.
Kemper Missouri Native Shade Garden:
A volunteer interested in native plants and organic gardening would be ideal for this position. Familiarity with Missouri's native forbs is desirable and knowledge of plant growth habits is helpful. The horticulturist is willing to train someone with the above qualifications who is dependable and can handle tough jobs.
Primary duties will be weeding, pruning shrubs, planting, mulching, and deadheading spent flowers.
Hosta and Scented Gardens:
Two volunteers are needed to assist with the care of the Hosta and Scented Gardens. The area to be maintained also includes the Tower Grove Avenue side of the Spink Pavilion. Occasionally, volunteers for this area may help in other areas in the North Gardens on an as needed basis.
Primary duties will be weeding, loosening up the mulch for better water penetration, watering, pruning, planting, mulching, edging beds and deadheading spent flowers.
Rhododendron and Ridgway Parking Lot Gardens:
One volunteer will assist with the care of the Rhododendron and Ridgway parking lot gardens. Occasionally, volunteers for this area may help in other areas in the North Gardens on an as needed basis.
Primary duties will be weeding, watering, pruning, planting, mulching, edging beds and deadheading spent flowers.
Off-Site Gardens:

Two volunteers are needed to assist with the care of the off-site gardens. The off-site gardens consist of the plantings at the Monsanto Center, the Commerce Bank Education Center, the Multi-Modal parking lots, Kohl Park, Castleman Circle and several smaller lots.
Primary duties will be weeding, watering, pruning, planting, mulching, edging beds and deadheading spent flowers.
Intensive Gardens:
Two volunteers will assist with the care of the Spoehrer Plaza, Bakewell Court, Swift Vista, Cohen Court, Baer Court, Climatron Axis. There are many annuals, pots, hanging baskets and water garden plants in these gardens that require constant attention.
Primary duties will be weeding, watering, pruning, planting, mulching, edging beds and deadheading spent flowers.
The Knolls, Holly Fields and Flower Walk:
Volunteers will assist with routine maintenance in this area that for the most part has a relatively natural appearance. Tasks would consist of duties such as weeding, edging, mulching, pruning, planting, leaf and branch removal. We are looking for two additional volunteers for this area that can spend around 3 hours per week from late March through early November.
