Lilies will be past peak in early July but daylillies will be coming into full flower.

The sacred lotus in the Japanese Garden will be in bloom and roses will be continuing.

Summersweet, Buddleja and rose of Sharons will start their long season of bloom.


Southern magnolias will still have fragrant flowers and the flowers on the golden raintrees will be turning into inflated seed pods. Crape myrtles will begin to flower.


Hydrangea 'Tardiva' will start flowering early in the month as well as some of the lacecap hydrangeas such as 'Tokyo Delight'. Bottlebrush buckeye remains in flower in some locations.


Pee Gee hydrangea and 'Little Lamb' are showstoppers in the July garden.

 

Mid-month gladiolus, agapanthus, and crinums will begin their summer show. Water lilies will also begin flowering.

Many beebalms will be flowering as will the St. John's worts including 'Hidcote'.


You can see the charming bottle brush grass in the Woodland Garden. Many cultivars of purple coneflowers as well as other coneflowers will be in flower.


Meadow rue is attractive and balloon flower continues. The large-flowering herbaceous mallows are impressive from mid-month on.


Yarrows come into full flower in many locations along with coreopsis and lavendin.


Most of the clematis will have finished their spring flush of flowers by July but serveral cultivars will repeat flowering throughout the summer. Most astilbes will also be past, but a few will still be showy. Blackberry lily will be starting.


Bear's breeches is an unusual and lovely plant that is very showy. The lovely spires of blazing star are dramatic. Many garden phlox will be flowering.


In the Kemper Center's herb garden the three trumpet honeysuckles planted next to each other are spectacular when in full flower.


Oxeye daisy brings bright yellow flowers to summer and the speedwells bring colors ranging from white to pink to blue. Hostas are mostly grown for their foliage but they also have attractive flowers, which can be seen in many locations.


Mimosa is still in flower early in the month and the chaste tree will be magnificent all summer.

 

Our summer annuals trail bed will be in full flower and other summer flowering annuals, including vincas and petunias, will be flowering throughout the Garden.

Other annuals of note will be begonias, ageratum and pentas.


Still others you will see are lantana, heliotrope, and caricature plant.


Some plants you will see in our summer baskets and containers include Chinese hibiscus, mandevilla, and scaevola.


Mid- to end of the month the cardinal flower will glow and the Japanese pagoda tree will produce showers of white panicles. Check out the spectacular Amazon water lily.


Phlox will be showy and the oxeye daisy will add bright yellow to the landscape. Fruits on the Italian arum can't be missed.


End of the month look for the striking blue salvia, the first flowers of the Japanese anemones, and the ironweeds.
