Witchhazels flower on warm sunny days. Specimens of Ozark (Hamamelis vernalis), Chinese (Hamamelis mollis), and Hybrid (Hamamelis x intermedia) species and cultivars can be found in the English Woodland, Jenkins Daylily and Japanese Gardens.

Fruits of the winterberry holly (Ilex verticillata) remain showy until they are consumed by birds and other wildlife.

Snowdrops are often found blooming in many locations on the grounds. The earliest crocus bloom by the tram path in the “field“ north of the Lehmann Building. Look for the large patch of blue snow crocus (Crocus tommasinianus) flowering in the Jenkins Daylily Garden.

During mild spells look for fresh blossoms on the flowering apricot trees (Prunus mume) and winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) in the Chinese Garden.

The camellias reach their peak of colorful bloom this month, making the Linnean House a rare treat on a cold winter day. Showy cyclamen and colorful Rex begonias illuminate the beds beneath the camellia trees. The heady aroma of the Fragrant olive trees (Osmanthus fragrans) wafts throughout this conservatory.

It may still be winter outside, but spring is in the air inside the Shoenberg Temperate House. Enjoy the rich fragrances of winter daphne (Daphne odora 'Marginata), paperbush (Edgeworthia papyrifera) and the fragrant sweetbox (Sarcococca ruscifolia) along with the showy yellow flowers of the Australian wattle tree (Acacia baileyana).

The orchid tree (Bauhinia x blakeana), powderpuff tree (Calliandra haematocephala) and the glorybower vine (Clerodendrum splendens) are among the showy tropical specimens in the Climatron®.
