The sweetly scented flowers of both Vernal (Hamamelis vernalis) and Chinese (H. mollis) witchhazel bloom on mild sunny days in the Jenkins Daylily, English Woodland and Japanese Gardens. A few intermedia hybrids (Hamamelis x intermedia) are also beginning to bloom.

A few precocious clumps of Giant snowdrop (Galanthus elwesii) blooming in the Mausoleum and the English Woodland Gardens are testimony to the exceptionally mild early winter weather.

Fruits of hollies are showy at this time of year. Especially noteworthy is the Winterberry hedge (Ilex verticillata ‘Red Sprite’) in the Kemper Bird Garden.
