General Culture:

Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Divide every 3-4 years if needed to control growth. Plants can spread aggressively by rhizomes in optimum growing conditions.

Noteworthy Characteristics:

'Jin-Dai' is a compact tartarian aster cultivar typically growing 3-4' tall. Species plants (see B560) may reach 6-7' tall. Distinctive paddle-shaped, almost tobacco-like basal leaves are up to 18" long and 5" wide, but higher up stem leaves are significantly smaller. Dense and abundant, flat-topped clusters (corymbs) of 1 inch diameter asters with purple rays and yellow centers appear in autumn on rigid stems. This is a late bloomer which usually blooms well to first frost. Attractive to butterflies. Cultivar was discovered growing at the Jin-Dai Botanical Garden in Tokyo, Japan.

Problems: Click for detailed list of pests and problems.

No serious insect or disease problems. This tall aster seldom needs summer pinching to control height or staking as long as it is grown in full sun.

Uses:

This is a large aster which may be best grown in border rears or in naturalized areas where it has room to expand.
