General Culture:
Best grown in rich, humusy, medium moisture, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade. Rhizomes may rot in winter if plants are grown in poorly drained soils. Appreciates a protected location in the St. Louis area where it is not reliably winter hardy. Fronds are evergreen in warm winter climates, however.
Noteworthy Characteristics:
This Japanese holly fern cultivar typically grows to 2' tall and features vase-shaped fronds (1-2.5' long ) with glossy, leathery, coarsely-fringed, holly-like pinnae. Pinnae are falcate (sickle-shaped) as the species name suggests. Fronds arise from erect, scaly rhizomes.
Problems:
No serious insect or disease problems. Winter hardiness in the St. Louis area is a concern.
Uses:
Best in woodland or shade gardens in locations protected from wind.
