General Culture:
Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Best in cold climates, and will not grow well south of USDA Zone 7.
Noteworthy Characteristics:
Norway spruce is a pyramidal evergreen tree which typically matures to 40-60' tall in cultivation in North America, but may reach 200' tall in the wild in its optimum native growing environments in Europe. Stiff dark green needles (to 3/4" long). Pendant seed cones (4-7" long) are reddish-brown. Pendulous branchlets distinguish this species from native American spruces.
Problems:
No serious insect or disease problems.
Uses:
Evergreen tree for large lawns, parks or woodland areas. Effective screen or windbreak in cold northern climates. Many dwarf cultivars of this species are available for foundation and rock garden plantings.
