Earthworms

Soil eaten by earthworms with organic matter is deposited on the soil surface as castings and is beneficial to the soil. Large castings like these from night crawlers may be a nuisance on putting greens and other highly maintained lawns.

General recommendations. The presence of earthworms should be encouraged, since these creatures contribute to your garden's health by aerating the soil. This is a particularly important function for much of the area in and around Saint Louis, which is characterized by heavy clay soils. Mulching your garden with grass clippings and/or compost provide will provide food for earthworms, besides adding valuable organic matter to the soil.
