Youth Programs—Fall/Winter 2008


Garden Kids logoGarden Kids (ages 6–8)

Over the river, past the wetland, through the woods and into the prairie—this seven-week series of Garden Kids will focus on native Missouri plants and habitats. Each class will include investigation in the Garden, a hands-on project and a healthy snack.

Seven-week series: Saturdays, September 6, 13, 20, 27; October 11, 25; and November 1 from 1:30–3 p.m.

Seven-class series: $112 members / $126 non-members

Oaks and Acorns Intergenerational Program (ages 6–12)

The Oaks and Acorns Program is especially for seniors who want to spend special time with their favorite young person. Participants will learn about a plant, its history and uses. They will also complete a take-home project together.

All classes run 10–11:30 a.m.

Individual Class: $16 members / $18 non-members
 

Be a Flower Pounder
Saturday, September 20
Plastic or paper? Neither! Create a one-of-a-kind cloth bag by pounding in the pigment of fresh flowers. We’ll have a hammering good time!

Groovy Gourds
Saturday, November 15
Bring the beauty of the garden indoors for the winter. Decorate your own groovy gourd with natural materials and learn about other fun gourd crafts.

Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate!
Saturday, December 20
Warm up for winter with hot chocolate! Learn about the wonderful world of chocolate, including the plant, its habitat and history. Make your very own jar of gourmet cocoa to enjoy on a cold winter’s day.

Buzz (ages 8 & up)

The Butterfly House’s BUZZ classes are springing up on Saturdays again. Each class is approximately 90 minutes. Class size is limited to 20 participants.

Monarch ButterflyMonarchs: The Great Migration
Saturday, September 27, 10–11:30 a.m.
Learn about one of the greatest migrations known to man and discuss how such tiny creatures can fly thousands of miles. Class will include life cycle, migration pattern, attracting monarchs, and monarch tagging. For students 8 years and up.

Individual Class: $16 members / $18 non-members

Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is per child.
