On Being Named to Receive the National Medal of Science
I am greatly honored by this distinguished award. For some 40 years, I have devoted myself to understanding and protecting the diversity of life on Earth in the light of increasing evidence of its accelerated destruction as a result of human activities. My hope is that we devote ourselves to compassionate concern about the Earth's future through preserving biodiversity throughout the world.
