TOMS was founded after American traveler Blake Mycoskie visited Argentina in 2006. He noticed many children in the areas surrounding Buenos Aires had cuts and infections in their feet, had to walk miles for food or to school, and had limited access to shoes.
Blake acted on a simple idea that has had a significant impact. He set out to reinvent the traditional Argentine alpargata for the U.S. market, and made a commitment to match every pair of TOMS purchased with a pair to a child in need.
As of April 1, 2009, TOMS has given over 140,000 pairs of shoes to children in need around the world.
The Missouri Botanical Garden conducts ongoing science and conservation work in many countries served by TOMS Shoes, including South Africa, Argentina, and the United States.
