Missouri Botanical Garden: Plants in Bloom
AT A GLANCE
May 2 - May 8, 2003
-
Azaleas in the Lopata Azalea and Rhododendron Garden and the English
Woodland Garden are just past peak bloom, but many are still very showy.
Large-leaf rhododendrons are becoming showy. Look for the large Giant
dogwood (Cornus controversa) by the east entrance to the Woodland
Garden.
-
Fragrant fringetrees (Chionanthus virginicus) are in full bloom
in many locations on the grounds.
-
Some azaleas are still showy in the Japanese Garden. The wisteria on
Teahouse Island is past peak, but still showy. Only a few early herbaceous
peonies are in bloom.
-
Spanish bluebells carpet the ground in the Mausoleum Garden.
-
Standard dwarf bearded iris and some Tall bearded iris are now blooming
in the Goodman Iris Garden.
-
The Shoenberg Temperate House is at its peak of spring blooming, and is
filled with the heady fragrance of Spanish broom (Spartium junceum).
The tiled Moorish garden is illuminated by the vibrant colors of bright
coral geraniums (Pelargonium x hortorum ‘Designer Hot Coral’, yellow
and orange gerbera daisies (Gerbera jamesonii hybrids), maroon coleus
(Soleonstemon ‘Oxblood’) and chartreuse Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia
nummularia ‘Goldilocks’). Be sure to see the beautiful blooms of the
pitcher plants (Sarracenia species) in the carnivorous plant bog.
-
Enjoy the rich aroma of star jasmine (Trachelospermum mandianum) in
the Linnean House. Impatiens (Impatiens walleriana ‘Dazzler Series’)
brighten the beds beneath the camellia trees.
