Missouri Botanical Garden: Plants in Bloom
AT A GLANCE
April 4 - April 10, 2003
-
Redbuds (Cercis canadensis, C. chinensis) and daffodils are at peak
bloom throughout the grounds. Tulips and pansy displays are becoming showier
by the day.
-
Flowering cherries are just past peak bloom in the Japanese Garden, but still
very showy. Many magnolias are still flowering.
-
Crabapples throughout the Garden are becoming showy. Dogwoods and azaleas are
beginning to bloom.
-
Wildflowers are blooming in the English Woodland Garden.
-
The rich and vibrant colors of spring are in full bloom in the Shoenberg
Temperate House. Brilliant magenta African daisies (Osteospermum
hybrid ‘Wildside') cascade over the rocks along the stairs. Rich blue and
white cineraria daisies (Pericallis hybrida ‘Jester Blue’) decorate
the tiled Moorish Garden.
-
The heady aroma of jasmine (Jasminum polyanthemum) fills the
Linnean House. Dainty fairy primroses (Primula malacoides ‘Prima
series’) and cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum ‘Concerto Cordelia')
decorate the beds beneath the camellias.
-
NOTE: Frost is in the forecast as this report goes to print. Damage to
flowering plants will be minimal at temperatures down to 28 degrees F, but
could be significant at lower readings. As always, frost damage will be
variable depending on species, plant location, and the length of time
temperatures hold at minimum.
