Missouri Botanical Garden: Plants in Bloom
AT A GLANCE
March 21 - March 27, 2003
-
Spring is in the air following on the heels of warm rains and warmer
temperatures. Early Magnolias and Forsythia are beginning to flower
throughout the grounds. Cherries in the Japanese Garden should be in
bloom by weeks end.
-
Early spring bulbs are blooming in the Bulb borders. Daffodils are
becoming showy. Azaleas are just beginning bloom.
-
Drifts of Squill (Scilla sp.) and Glory of the Snow (Chionodoxa
sp.) brighten the understory in the Mausoleum Garden.
-
The camellias continue to be very showy in the Linnean House. The heady
aroma of jasmine (Jasminum polyanthemum) and Fragrant olive
(Osmanthus fragrans) fills the house. The beds are decorated with
dainty Fairy primroses (Primula malacoides ‘Prima series’) and
Cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum ‘Concerto Cordelia).
-
The rich and vibrant colors of spring are in full bloom in the Shoenberg
Temperate House. Brilliant magenta African daisies (Osteospermum
hybrid ‘Wildside) cascade over the rocks along the stairs. The tiled
Moorish Garden is an oasis featuring daffodils (Narcissus
‘Marieke’), hyacinths (Hyacinthus orientalis ‘Atlantic’) and
German primrose (Primula obconica ‘Libre series’).
-
Pansies throughout the grounds are flowering with renewed vigor.
