Missouri Botanical Garden: Plants in Bloom
AT A GLANCE
January 17 - January 23, 2003
-
Ozark witchhazels (Hamamelis vernalis) are in bloom. Large specimens
can be found in the Jenkins Daylily and Japanese Gardens.
-
Escape the frigid cold and enjoy spring in the Shoenberg Temperate House.
Brightly colored German primrose (Primula obconica ‘Libre series’),
Paperwhites (Narcissus tazetta ‘Israel’) and Cyclamen (Cyclamen
‘Concerto Rose Pink Louisa’) illuminate the tiled Moorish Garden.
-
The Linnean House is bursting with color and fragrance. Many of the camellias
are beginning to bloom, accompanied by dainty Fairy primroses (Primula
malacoides ‘Prima series’) and Cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum ‘Concerto
Cordelia). Enjoy the rich aroma of Fragrant olive (Osmanthus fragrans).
-
A few early clumps of Giant snowdrops (Galanthus elwesii) are blooming
in the Mausoleum and Kemper Bird gardens.
-
Fruits of hollies throughout the grounds are showy.
-
The cheery yellow flowers of Winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) in the
Chinese Garden appear sporadically during warm winter spells.
-
Pansies may look a little worn for the remainder of winter, but their
well-established root systems will push out vigorous new growth and blooms
as soon as conditions allow.
