Ozark witchhazels (Hamamelis vernalis) are in bloom. Large specimens
can be found in the Jenkins Daylily and Japanese Gardens.
Fruits of hollies throughout the grounds are showy.
It may be winter outdoors, but blooms are plentiful in the Shoenberg Temperate
House. Yellow daisies (Argyranthemum frutescens ‘Maggie’), paperwhites
(Narcissus tazetta ‘Israel’) and rose colored cyclamen (Cyclamen
‘Concerto Rose Pink Louisa’) brighten the tiled Moorish Garden. Smell the
heady fragrance of the Wintersweet tree (Chimonanthes praecox).
The Linnean House is bursting with color and fragrance. Many of the camellias
are beginning to bloom, accompanied by richly colored poinsettias
(Euphorbia pulcherrima ‘Freedom Rose’ and ‘Winter Rose Pink’) and
cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum ‘Concerto Cordelia). Enjoy the rich aroma
of Fragrant olive (Osmanthus fragrans).
The cheery yellow flowers of Winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) in
the Chinese Garden appear sporadically during warm winter spells.
Pansies may look a little worn for the remainder of winter, but their
well-established root systems will push out vigorous new growth and blooms
as soon as conditions allow.
