Missouri Botanical Garden: Plants in Bloom
AT A GLANCE
December 13 - December 19, 2002
-
The fragrant Eastern witchhazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is in bloom in
many locations on the grounds. Large specimens can be found at the south end
of the Jenkins Daylily Garden and by the circular driveway south of the English
Woodland Garden.
-
Fruits of hollies throughout the grounds are showy.
-
Winter may have arrived outdoors, but blooms are plentiful in the Shoenberg
Temperate House. Yellow daisies (Argyranthemum frutescens ‘Maggie’),
purple Mexican bush sage (Salvia leucantha) and rose colored cyclamen
(Cyclamen ‘Concerto Rose Pink Louisa’) brighten the tiled Moorish
Garden. Smell the heady fragrance of the Wintersweet tree (Chimonanthes
praecox).
-
The Linnean House is bursting with color and fragrance. Many of the camellias
are beginning to bloom, accompanied by richly colored poinsettias (Euphorbia
pulcherrima ‘Freedom Rose’ and ‘Winter Rose Pink’) and cyclamen (Cyclamen
persicum ‘Concerto Cordelia). Look for the showy pink sweet pea blossoms
(Lathyrus odoratus ‘Winter-flowering pink’), and enjoy the rich aroma of
fragrant olive (Osmanthus fragrans).
