Missouri Botanical Garden: Plants in Bloom
AT A GLANCE
March 16 - March 22, 2001
-
Spring is nearing its peak in the Shoenberg Temperate House. The walled
Moorish garden features the fragrant blooms of Hyacinths (Hyacinthus
orientalis), bright yellow Daffodils (Narcissus 'King Alfred')
and bright violet Cyclamen (Cyclamen 'Sierra Purple'). Look
upstairs for the unusual Pocketbook flowers (Calceolaria 'Anytime
Mix').
-
The camellia trees are just past their peak of bloom, but are still lovely
in the Linnean House. Smell the sweet aroma of Jasmine (Jasminum
polyanthemum) and the Fragrant olive trees (Osmanthus fragrans).
Cyclamen and fairy primrose (Primula malacoides) brighten the beds
beneath the camellias. Jasmine and Chenile plants (Acalypha pendula
'Firetails') are featured in the hanging baskets.
-
Squill (Scilla spp.), Snowdrops (Galanthus spp.) and Crocus are now blooming
in many locations on the grounds. A few early daffodils are just beginning
to bloom.
-
Witchhazels are blooming in many locations on the grounds. The sweet
fragrance of their flowers is most noticeable on warm, sunny days.
-
The Orchid tree (Bauhinia x blakeana), Powderpuff tree
(Calliandra haematocephala) and the Glorybower vine (Clerodendrum
splendens) in the Climatron® are showy.
-
Pansy flowers will continue to be produced on a sporadic basis during
mild spells in winter and the well-established plants will resume heavy
bloom in the spring.
