Missouri Botanical Garden: Plants in Bloom
AT A GLANCE
February 22 - March 1, 2001
-
The camellia trees are at their peak of bloom in the Linnean House.
Smell the sweet aroma of the Fragrant olive trees (Osmanthus fragrans).
Don't miss the rare Yellow camellia (Camellia chrysantha) blooming
near the east end of the north bed. Cyclamen and Fairy primrose (Primula
malacoides) brighten the beds beneath the camellias.
-
Leave winter behind, and enjoy a colorful spring two months early in the
Shoenberg Temperate House. The fragrances in this conservatory are
incredibly rich right now, thanks to Hyacinths (Hyacinthus orientalis)
in the Moorish garden, Paperbush (Edgeworthia papyrifera) and the
fragrant Sweetbox (Sarcococca ruscifolia).
-
The first Snowdrops (Galanthus spp.) are now blooming in many locations
on the ground, and Winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis) is beginning to
bloom in the English Woodland Garden. These are welcome hints of seasonal
change and remind us that winter will soon begin to loosen its grip.
-
Witchhazels are blooming in many locations on the grounds. The sweet
fragrance of their flowers is most noticeable on warm, sunny days.
-
The Orchid tree (Bauhinia x blakeana), Powderpuff tree
(Calliandra haematocephala) and the Glorybower vine (Clerodendrum
splendens) in the Climatron® are showy.
-
Pansy flowers will continue to be produced on a sporadic basis during
mild spells in winter and the well-established plants will resume heavy
bloom in the spring.
