Missouri Botanical Garden: Plants in Bloom
AT A GLANCE
APRIL 9 - APRIL 15, 1999
-
The peak season of spring color has arrived with Flowering cherries
in full bloom in the Japanese Garden. Crabapples, Redbuds and
Serviceberries are in full bloom throughout the Grounds, and Dogwoods
are beginning to become showy.
-
There's a great display of Daffodils, Tulips, and other spring
bulbs throughout the grounds this week, but the bulb borders are
especially showy.
-
The displays of Pansies combined with Tulips in the Milles
Sculpture Garden are outstanding.
-
Many Azaleas are now blooming in the Lopata Azalea and
Rhododendron Garden.
-
Enjoy the peak of bloom in the Shoenberg Temperate House. Masses
of purple and white African daisies (Osteospermum sp.) accompany the
showy Waxflower tree (Chamelaucium ciliatum) and fragrant yellow
Broom (Chamaecytisus glaber). Fairy primroses, Pansies and Cineraria
decorate the tiled Moorish fountain. Look on the rock wall beneath
the grape arbor for the dramatic yellow spikes of Verbascum arcturus
from Crete.
-
Enjoy the intense fragrance of Jasmine (Jasminum polyanthemum) in
the Linnean House. The brilliant yellow flowers of the Canary Island
broom standards impart a pleasant scent. The Camellias are nearly
finished, but a few beautiful blossoms remain. Fairy primrose
(Primula malacoides) and Cyclamen fill the house with vibrant color.
-
Large drifts of Daffodils can be found among the many perennials
and wildflowers flowering in the English Woodland Garden.
