Missouri Botanical Garden: Plants in Bloom
AT A GLANCE
MARCH 19 - MARCH 25, 1999
-
Spring has arrived with Magnolias and Forsythias now beginning to
bloom, along with a host of early flowering bulbs including
Glory-of-the-snow, Squill, Daffodils and Crocus in many locations on
the grounds.
-
The large Arnold Promise hybrid witchhazels (Hamamelis x
intermedia 'Arnold Promise') in the English Woodland Garden and
Seiwa-En, the Japanese Garden are outstanding. Large specimens of the
Ozark witchhazel (Hamamelis vernalis) by the path bordering the
English Woodland and Japanese Gardens are in full bloom and very
fragrant on warm, sunny days. Hellebores are also showy in the
English Woodland Garden.
-
Enjoy the peak of bloom in the Shoenberg Temperate House. Inhale
the aroma of the fragrant Sweetbox (Sarcococca ruscifolia) and
Freesia. Masses of flowering Cylamen blanket the upstairs portion of
the house, beneath the showy blossoms of the Mediterranean redbud
(Cercis siliquastrum). Purple and white African daisies (Osteospermum
sp.) are particularly showy. Fairy primroses, Daffodils and Cineraria
decorate the tiled Moorish fountain.
-
The Camellias are past their peak of bloom in the Linnean House,
but are still quite lovely. Be sure to see them before they finish by
early April. Cyclamen and Primrose decorate the beds below the
Camellias, accompanied by the sweet scent of the Fragrant olive trees
(Osmanthus fragrans).
-
Clerodendrums and Begonias are just some of the many plants of
interest in the Climatron® Geodesic Greenhouse this week.
-
Fragrant Winter honeysuckles are blooming in the English Woodland,
Zimmerman Scented and Kemper Fragrance Gardens.
-
Pansies are back in bloom again in many locations on the grounds.
-
Korean rhododendrons (Rhododendron mucronulatum) and early
Magnolias are blooming in the Lopata Azalea and Rhododendron Garden.
