Missouri Botanical Garden: Plants in Bloom
AT A GLANCE
MAY 8 - MAY 14, 1998
-
The ancient Yellowwood (Cladrastis lutea) by the stone wall in the
Jenkins Daylily Garden is magnificent this spring.
-
Tall bearded iris in the Goodman Iris Garden are now very showy.
-
Peonies in the Japanese Garden are also very showy.
-
Rhododendrons are in full bloom in the Lopata Azalea and
Rhododendron Garden.
-
Bleeding hearts and Columbines are among the many perennials and
wildflowers blooming in the English Woodland Garden.
-
Wood hyacinths are still showy in the Mausoleum Garden.
-
Kousa dogwoods and Fringetrees are in full bloom in many locations
on the grounds.
-
It's peak blooming time in the Shoenberg Temperate House. Look for
the showy Lacecap hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla `Mariesii') and the
Crimson bottlebrush (Callistemon citrinus). In the carnivorous bog,
Pitcher plants (Sarracenia spp.) are sending up new lush, tall
pitchers, and the Venus flytraps (Dionaea muscipula) are blooming and
eating heartily.
-
The sweet fragrance of Star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides)
permeates the air in the Linnean House. The fragrant yellow blossoms
of the Canary Island broom (Genista canariensis) surround the fountain
in the center.
-
You'll never see a finer display of Indian paintbrush (Castilleja
coccinea) than the planting in the Lucy and Stanley Lopata Prairie
Garden at the Kemper Center for Home Gardening.
-
Pansies in the Lois Whiteside Franklin Flower Trial Garden at the
Kemper Center for Home Gardening are very showy.
-
Climbing roses in the Gladney Rose Garden and classic Shrub roses in
the Lehmann Rose Garden are just beginning to bloom.
