Missouri Botanical Garden: Plants in Bloom
AT A GLANCE
MARCH 27 - APRIL 2, 1998
-
Flowering cherries are beginning to bloom in the Japanese Garden.
-
Large masses of Squill (Scilla spp.) and Glory-of-the-snow
(Chionodoxa spp.) are flowering in the Mausoleum Garden. Both of
these hardy, early-spring bulbs can be found in other locations on the
grounds, including the Historic Garden, and the Hosta Walk.
-
Camellias are past their peak, but are still very showy in the
Linnean House. Sweet aromas fill the air: the scent of Jasmine
(Jasminum polyanthemum) dominates the west wing of the house, the
fragrance of Mexican orange (Choisya ternata) wafts throughout the
east wing, and the fragrant yellow blossoms of the Canary Island broom
(Genista canariensis) surround the fountain in the center.
-
Large drifts of early Daffodils are blooming in the English
Woodland Garden. Pulmonarias are just beginning to be showy.
-
Spring is in full swing in the Shoenberg Temperate House. Masses of
flowering Cyclamen blanket the beds on the upper level, accompanied by
the showy and fragrant blue flowers of the California lilac (Ceanothus
Ray Hartmann'). Climbing white Roses (Rosa banksiae Alba plena')
spill over the wall of the Moorish Garden, and deep blue Daisies
(Cineraria sp.) complement the tiles of the splashing fountain.
-
Many different varieties of Pansies are being tested for winter
hardiness in the Lois Whiteside Franklin Flower Trial Garden at the
Center for Home Gardening. Pansies planted in the large beds in the
Milles Sculpture Garden are becoming showy.
