Missouri Botanical Garden: Plants in Bloom
AT A GLANCE
MARCH 6 - MARCH 26, 1998
-
Cornelian cherries are near peak bloom. Large specimens can be
found in the Herb and Japanese Gardens, as well as the Hosta Walk.
-
The large planting of Forsythia (Forsythia sp.) on the Knolls is
becoming showy.
-
Masses of Snowdrops (Galanthus spp.) and Squill (Scilla spp.) are
flowering in the Mausoleum Garden. Both of these hardy, early-spring
bulbs can be found in other locations on the grounds, including the
English Woodland Garden, and the Hosta Walk.
-
Camellias are at peak bloom in the Linnean House -- don't miss the
show! Colorful Fairy primrose, Cyclamen and the sweet scent of the
Fragrant olive trees (Osmanthus fragrans) accompany the spectacular
Camellias.
-
Several species of Hellebores (Helleborus spp.) are in full bloom
in the English Woodland Garden.
-
Spring is arriving in the Shoenberg Temperate House. Masses of
flowering Cyclamen give a ground cover effect to the beds on the upper
level. Look for the showy pink flowers of the Judas-tree (Cercis
siliquastrum), a Mediterranean cousin of our native Redbud, and smell
the sweet aroma of the Fragrant sweetbox (Sarcococca ruscifolia). The
blue and white tiles of the Moorish Garden are accented with colorful
Primroses and Cineraria.
-
White forsythia (Abeliophyllum distichum), Winter jasmine (Jasminum
nudiflorum), Flowering apricots (Prunus mume) and Downy cherries
(Prunus tomentosa) are showy in the Chinese Garden.
-
Many Witchhazels are still in bloom, including the Ozark witchhazels
(Hamamelis vernalis) in both the Jenkins Daylily Garden and the
Japanese Garden; Chinese witchhazels (Hamamelis mollis) in both the
English Woodland and Japanese Gardens; and Hybrid witchhazels,
especially Arnold Promise' (Hamamelis x intermedia Arnold Promise')
in the English Woodland Garden, and Jelena' (Hamamelis x intermedia
Jelena') in the Hosta Walk. Witchhazel flowers are showiest, and
their fragrance strongest on warm, sunny days.
-
The perfume from the flowers of the Fragrant honeysuckle shrubs
(Lonicera standishii) is most noticeable on warm, sunny days. Large
specimens can be found in the Heckman Bulb Garden, just across the
path from the Rock Garden, and by the tram path in the English
Woodland Garden.
-
Many different varieties of Pansies are being tested for winter
hardiness in the Lois Whiteside Franklin Flower Trial Garden at the
Kemper Center for Home Gardening. Pansies planted in the large beds in the
Milles Sculpture Garden are becoming very showy.
