Missouri Botanical Garden: Plants in Bloom
AT A GLANCE
FEBRUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 26, 1998
-
Snowdrops (Galanthus elwesii) are flowering in many locations on
the grounds, including the English Woodland Garden, the Mausoleum
Garden, and the Hosta Walk.
-
Hellebores (Helleborus spp.) are beginning to bloom in the English
Woodland Garden.
-
Ozark witchhazels (Hamamelis vernalis) are in bloom. Large
specimens can be found near the south end of the Jenkins Daylily
Garden. Chinese witchhazels (Hamamelis mollis) are also flowering,
with handsome specimens in both the English Woodland and Japanese
Gardens. Hybrid witchhazels are also showy, especially Jelena
(Hamamelis x intermedia Jelena') in the Hosta Walk, as well as Arnold
Promise (Hamamelis x intermedia Arnold Promise') and Diane (Hamamelis
x intermedia Diane') in the English Woodland Garden. Witchhazel
flowers are showiest, and their fragrance strongest on warm, sunny
days.
-
Camellias are reaching their peak of bloom in the Linnean House --
don't miss the show! Colorful Fairy primrose, Cyclamen and the sweet
scent of the Fragrant olive trees (Osmanthus fragrans) accompany the
spectacular Camellias.
-
Spring is arriving in the Shoenberg Temperate House. Look for the
showy pink flowers of the Judas-tree (Cercis siliquastrum), a
Mediterranean cousin of our native Redbud, and smell the sweet aroma
of the unusual Paperbush (Edgworthia papyrifera) and the Fragrant
sweetbox (Sarcococca ruscifolia). The blue and white tiles of the
Moorish Garden are accented with colorful Primroses and Cineraria.
-
Fruits of the Winter red winterberry hollies (Ilex verticillata
Winter Red') on Spoehrer Plaza are still showy.
-
The perfume from the flowers of the Fragrant honeysuckle shrubs
(Lonicera standishii) is most noticeable on warm, sunny days. Large
specimens can be found in the Heckman Bulb Garden, just across the
path from the Rock Garden, and by the tram path in the English
Woodland Garden.
-
Many plants are flowering in the Climatron®. The Red powderpuff tree
(Calliandra haematocephala) is showy when viewed from the bridge.
-
Many different varieties of Pansies are being tested for winter
hardiness in the Lois Whiteside Franklin Flower Trial Garden at the
Kemper Center for Home Gardening.
