Societies and Organizations
The Academy of Science of St. Louis Founded in 1856, this is the oldest science academy west of the Mississippi River. Today it is the home of scientific literacy and educational initiatives including the Junior Academy of Science and the Greater St. Louis Science Fair.
American Bamboo Society The ABS was formed in 1979 and today we have over 1100 members living throughout the US and in 39 other countries. The ABS issues the bimonthly Bamboo and the annual journal "Bamboo Science and Culture" to disseminate information about the use, care, propagation and beauty of bamboo.
American Fern Society AFS was established in 1893 with the objective of fostering interest in ferns and fern allies. To this end it encourages correspondence and the exchange of information and specimens between members via its newsletter, the Fiddlehead Forum.
American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) Publishers of BioScience, AIBS has been a national center for biologists and the biological sciences since 1947.
American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) This organization is dedicated to promoting public awareness of botanical art and to encouraging the development of this continuing artistic tradition. Make sure to check out the Participant's Gallery.
American Society of Plant Taxonomists Publishers of Systematic Botany, ASPT promotes research and teaching in the taxonomy, systematics, and phylogeny of vascular and nonvascular plants. Organized in 1935.
Asociación Latinoamericana de Botánica, ALB (Latin American Society of Botanists) Botany information about Central, South America and Caribe.
Botanical Society of America Publishers of American Journal of Botany, BSA exists to promote botany, the field of basic science dealing with the study and inquiry into the form, function, diversity, reproduction, evolution, and uses of plants and their interactions within the biosphere.
Canadian Botanical Association The Association represents Canadian Botany and botanists in matters of local, national and international importance. The preservation of botanically significant natural areas is of special interest. Publishers of the bulletin, Plant Press.
Ecological Society of America Publishers of Ecology, ESA was founded in 1915 to promote the science of ecology. Site is a bit graphic-heavy.

International Organization for Plant Information The IOPI manages a series of cooperative international projects that aim to create databases of plant taxonomic information. Projects include the Global Plant Checklist (now operating), Species Plantarum Project and the Database of Plant Databases.
National Academy of Sciences The publisher of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (the second-most cited scientific serial in the world), NSA advises the federal government on scientific and technical matters.
National Science Foundation An independent agency of the U.S. Government, NSF is probably best-known as a source for research grants. Read more about applying for your share of the pie.
Phycological Society of America The PSA is a scientific organization that promotes phycology, the study of algae, and fosters phycological research and education. Publishers of the highly respected Journal of Phycology.
Society for Conservation Biology SCB, the publisher of "Conservation Biology", was formed to help develop the scientific means for the protection, maintenance, and restoration of life on this planet. Check out "What's New?"
Society for Ecological Restoration This site is for those interested in ecologically-sensitive repair and management of ecosystems. Not very fancy, but current.
