As
an example, Keraudren (1958) formerly recognized 9 species of Melanophylla. In
our revision (Schatz et
al. 1998), new collections allowed us to reevaluate the validity of several
species that were
originally known only from a single collection, as well as to reconsider the
limits of variability of all
species. As a result, we merged, and
therefore expanded, the concepts of several species within the genus. In addition, we described a new species
with unique features, which was
first collected only in 1986.
