9. Keep your car and driving techniques in tip-top tune.

Calm and careful driving habits can get you 20 percent more miles per gallon than the average driver and 50 percent more than wasteful driving with a hot head and heavy foot on the pedal.

While you’re at it, check tire pressure regularly. Properly inflated tires can increase gas mileage by 3 percent—at today’s prices, that’s saving a gallon of gas.

Idle FreeAnd don't forget to stop idling! If you think you’ll be stopped for more than one minute, turn off your engine. You will use less fuel restarting your car and you won’t be sending fuel dollars up in carbon-laden smoke.
